Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Windsock Frame

Windsocks come in many sizes and shapes throughout Australia but for the most part, they connect quite easily to their frames and onto poles. In this article we’ll go over a few different kinds of windsock frames and how you can connect them onto a pole.

Connecting your Windsock Frame onto a Pole

The first frame we’ll discuss is the windsock frame offered by the Custom Windsock Co Here.

To connect this frame onto a pole or something that you can use for mounting, you’ll need a female/female couple that is threaded ¾ NPT (for 45cm, 60cm or 90cm  frames) or ½ NPT (for 15cm, 25 cm and 33 cm frames). You will also need a male threaded pole (nipple) that is  ¾ NPT (usually about 25 mm OD) or ½ NPT (usually about 2cm OD) depending on the frame size you have. Simply screw the frame into the coupler and then the stub pole into the other side of the coupler

Other Windsock Frame Designs

Other windsock frames you can find around Australia are the type designed such that they can “drop” into a larger diameter pole. The weight of the frame itself will keep the windsock and frame from lifting out of the pole. Usually these types of frames are the double hoop style (extended frames) and quite heavy. To install these it’s quite simple, just find the corresponding size stub pole that has an ID that is the same as the OD of the windsock male stub. Then just drop it in

Mounting and Attaching your Windsock Frame and Pole

Once you have your windsock frame on a stub pole, the stub pole might be long enough for you to mount it onto a larger pole, structure or a wall. This can be done in many ways with the use of pole to pole mounts, vertical wall mounts and tripod mounts

Pole to pole mounts are great for anyone that's looking to attach the nipple extending off of their windsock frame to another (usually longer and larger diameter pole). This is often seen at refineries or on large structures that have railings and walkways whereby the railing or platform pole will be used as the support to hold the windsock frame. This pole to pole mount is also used by those who have standalone steel or aluminium poles that they want to attach a windsock to.

The tripod windsock mount is great for any peaked or flat roof top. The additional height the tripod mount provides add to the visibility of the windsock and maintenance and changes are easy to preform.

Vertical Wall Mounts for Windsocks

Vertical wall mounts for windsocks are used when one wants to install a windsock to a vertical wall and have the windsock extend up above their roofline. The vertical wall mounts installed with lag bolts into the structure and stands-off from the wall 30 cm. The clamps pinch the nipple pipe that is attached to the windsock frame and allows it to freely move above the roofline. This installation method is common with those who do not have a separate structure or pole to install the windsock to, but would rather utilize their building for the windsocks.
