The state seal that appears in the middle of the Idaho State flag was designed by Miss Emma Edwards in 1891. The Start hat appears in the lower part of the seal was a symbol that Idaho was a new state. Originally the flag of Idaho was just the state name on a blue field but it was changed in March of 1927 when Miss Edwards surviving original artwork was found. The miner in the seal is representative of the well-known minerals found in the state including lead, zinc, silver, gold, and copper.
