What is a Windsock?

What is a Windsock?

We’ve been getting a lot of great feedback on our blogs. Our customers have said that we do a great job informing the public about our products. This way customers get to make an informed decision about whether they truly want to purchase a windsock, how much it might cost them, how long it will last and what value it could bring them.  That being said, we have failed to inform the public on the very basic questions such as “what is a windsock?” “What does a windsock tell you?” “How can I read a windsock?” and more. We wanted to create this basic post to address those questions and make sure that its clear.

What is a windsock? It’s a long circular textile tube that resembles a sock. It’s a physical and basic tool used to determine the speed and direction of the wind.

What does a windsock tell you? A windsock tells you the wind direction and wind speed.

  • Wind direction Is the direction in which the windsock is pointing. A windsock pointing west indicates an easterly wind.
  • The wind speed is indicated but how much the windsock has inflated. When you have a striped windsock, you can approximate the knots, mph or km/hr of the wind gust. Check out this article to see a chart of wind speeds based on sock inflation.

Where might you find a windsock? They are typically used at airports to indicate the direction and strength of the wind so that pilots can safely take off and land their planes. They are also used at chemical plants or oil and gas sites where, if a gas leak occurs, the people on site can visually detect the severity on the ground by looking at how the airborne chemicals might be carried by the wind depending on the wind speed and direction.

Recently, there has been a rise of windsocks being used for recreation purposes at recreation centers, pickleball courts, country clubs, tennis courts, golf courses, frisbee disc golf courses and even at personal residences for decoration purposes. These are practical uses for windsocks as wind speed and direction are important when playing a sport like pickleball. Check out this article to read more on why.

We have also seen an increase in purchases of windsocks for family farms. You can check out this article here to ready more about why having a family farm windsock or a hobby farm windsock might be a nice addition to your property. Custom Aviation windsocks have also been on the rise as people with private hangers and private air strips want to add a personalized safety tool to their property.

So, what do our customers use their custom windsock for exactly? Mostly they use it to indicate to them the speed and direction of the wind but its also a nice, personalized touch for their business, their court, their center, or their property.
